This one was our first time dipping our toe in the waters of buying a classic car. Not just any classic car - A 1973 Porsche 911e Knowing nothing about them (only what I’d googled the night before) I bravely, and retrospectively stupidly, threw caution to the wind and bought it. We were purchasing the vehicle through a 70 year old ‘respectable’ trader to whom I put my full trust in and took his word for the car being a matching number car and that the mileage stacked up correctly. For those that don’t know; matching numbers means the vehicle is still running it’s original engine and gearbox. I checked over the car, looked underneath it, kicked the tyres and paid the fella without looking at any of the docs myself. Another lesson to be learnt there, this story is full of ‘em!
The clock showed only 54,000 miles and the car was in immaculate condition so we were over the moon with our purchase, minter!
Fast forward a few hours, upon reading the docs I previously skipped past, I quickly found out that the car was not a matching number car, in fact there was an invoice in the paperwork for a new engine and the mileage was actually 154,000. It had completely been around the clock once before!
I followed up with said old fella and he just shrugged his shoulders and said ever so casually “Oh well! It is what it is!”
We ended up selling the car and making a loss, but it’s all part of the game.
