Take a dive into one of the rarest Porsches on the planet — a car from one of the most coveted collections, one that’s been rescued from a place that’s been clouded in mystery for decades.
This is the Sultan of Brunei’s 1994 Porsche 964 Turbo S Slantnose.
One of only a handful of cars ever released from the collection, it was custom-built by Porsche for the Sultan, known for his out-of-this-world specifications.
This is a completely undocumented car, having never been seen by the public eye to this level before — and today, we’re going to uncover the story behind it, and the collection it escaped from.
Since the 1980s, the Sultan of Brunei and his brother, Prince Jefri, along with the rest of the Royal Family, have built a collection reaching over 7,000 cars, and are responsible for ordering some of the most expensive and unique cars from manufacturers across the globe.
Up until recently, the collection was shrouded in mystery. With only a limited number of photos ever released, the stories of what could be in there were almost mythical.
This all changed last year when a folder of leaked images was exposed, showcasing the variety of models and specs the Sultan had hidden away — giving the automotive world a peek into what’s stored in the eight-story garage at the Royal Residence.
Varying from ten of the 106 McLaren F1s in existence to a collection of over twenty Ferrari Enzos, the Sultan’s desire to collect as much of, and the rarest of, is undeniable.
Between reportedly saving Bentley from bankruptcy in the 1990s — thanks to buying over half the cars they produced in one year — and amassing a collection of over 600 Mercedes, 500 Rolls-Royces, and hundreds of Ferraris, the list goes on. Here are just a few of the mind-blowing cars the Royal Family ordered:
As you can see, the Royal Family has without a doubt one of the most incredible, and most eclectic, car collections on the planet.
The collection is stored in an eight-level garage located at the Royal Residence in the jungles of Brunei. Only recently was air conditioning installed — meaning, sadly, a number of the rarest cars in the world have been left to harbor mold, stored away in darkness, never to have seen the road.
Explanation of the Car Itself
This car has lived most of its life tucked away, barely driven — and now we’re lucky enough to have it here at the Dynasty HQ.
So, why does this 964 look like this? This is what’s called a Slantnose, or in German, a Flachbau. The front and rear quarters were redesigned by hand and formed on wooden bucks — making this the last hand-formed Porsche ever made.
Originally introduced on the G-Series 911, the Slantnose option was reserved only for Porsche’s best customers.
At the end of the 964 model run, Porsche had a number of Turbo chassis left over and wanted to do something special to celebrate the generation.
Porsche assigned these chassis to their Special Wishes department — now known as Sonderwunsch. This factory division acted as Porsche’s own “skunkworks,” responsible for developing special cars such as the Speedster, the 959, and the 917K — the road-going version of their Le Mans-winning race car.
The 964-generation Slantnose, however, is one of the rarest ever made. With only 76 964 Slantnoses built, and just 12 right-hand-drive examples, even without its storied provenance, this is one of the Holy Grails of Porsche collectability.
Performance Upgrades and Info
The 1994 Turbo S Flachbau (X84) was the final Porsche ever built to feature custom quarter panels (front and rear), including integrated rear quarter ducts — all hand-formed on wooden bucks.
The 1994 Turbo S Flachbau (X84) also featured the X88 Turbo S motor — the final iteration of the single-turbo Mezger engine. With 385 hp, it represented the pinnacle of the 964 era. Only 155 engines were built.
Note: The X88 motor was the most powerful 964 production engine ever made. Only 12 RHD 1994 Turbo S Flachbau cars were produced.
Provenance
So how did this end up here?
Over recent years, the Sultan has begun selling off some of his cars, with a select few coming to market after passing quietly through collectors’ hands behind the scenes.
One way we know this car came from the collection is by its Magic Number sticker — a hidden identifier placed somewhere on the car, confirming its royal origin. We hope you enjoyed this little piece of history,
